Amarachi Onyima is a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor in the District of Columbia, a National Certified Counselor, and a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. She earned her Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.
Amarachi has 8 years of experience in the mental health field working in a wide range of social services settings. She has provided mental health counseling, vocational counseling, and clinical case management to adults and families coping with the negative psychological impacts of homelessness, substance abuse, incarceration, unemployment, family trauma, relationship issues, financial insecurity, and physical and mental disabilities.
Her approach to therapy is holistic, person-centered, and strengths-based. She draws from a variety of evidence-based practices such as CBT, solution-focused, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed, and behavioral techniques to create a tailored approach for each of her clients. Amarachi teaches her clients how to use their innate skills and tools to challenge and change their harmful thoughts and behaviors, improve their emotional regulation, and develop the essential coping strategies needed to target their current problems. Her laid-back, patient, and non-judgmental counseling style creates a therapeutic space where her clients feel safe, supported, and heard. She believes that her clients are the experts in their own lives and works collaboratively with them to clarify their goals for treatment.
