Counselors are comparable to GPS systems in that they are there to assist individuals in orientating their map. They are there to help individuals assess the paths taken and guide them towards their desired destination. What sparked interest in this field was the challenge to help others in sharpening their tools to support them on their journey.
In order to accomplish this Ericka E.S. Nelson obtained her M.A. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Trinity Washington University and subsequently became a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor (LGPC-DC), Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC), and a Board Certified Telemental Health Counselor (BC-TMH).
Over the past 8 years Ericka has been able to engage in counseling services with a variety of populations in various capacities. This includes assisting young people with behavior modifications within the school setting and working with the homeless population through trauma-based issues to enhance their lives. Ericka’s most defining moment was facilitating counseling groups with young women to assist them in discovering their hidden potential.
Ericka has been working with Onyx Therapy Group for the past 3 years and has been able to hone in on her counseling skills through the increase of clients and the expansion of disorders. Ericka subscribes to utilizing a blend of Cognitive Behavioral, Gestalt, and Solution-Focused Therapies to assist her clients in meeting their goals. She has been able to bring her relaxed, warm and inviting personality to the session while creating a safe and non-judgmental space; encouraging clients to expressing their truth. Combined
with her background in Communications from Norfolk State University, Ericka has been able to develop herself into a powerhouse in presenting to various audiences on topics including self-care, self-love, and self-esteem.
